Houston Professional Organizers #1 Tips for an Organized and Stress Free Holiday Season

Last month I asked some of my fellow NAPO Houston organizers and business partners #1 tips for an organized and stress free holiday season and below are their tips. What is your tip for a stress free holiday season?

Adonna Braly of Clutter Roundup: "Give experiences, not gifts."

Naomi Kealy of Charming Spaces: "Make a list for each person you're buying for so you don't forget anything or anyone. I send my kid's lists to the grandparents too!"

Michelle Smithpeter of Pretty Practical Spaces: "As you open up your seasonal decorations, attach detailed labels to each of the tubs/boxes/bags, so you know what goes back where!  And it makes next year that much easier ""

Ann Zanon of A2Z Organizing Solutions: "I keep a list of what I gave to whom every year so I don't duplicate but as Adonna said, we don't give a lot of stuff. I also don't usually give friend gifts. Instead, for many years, I have held a Cookie Decorating Party as my gift to my friends. I bake all the cookies, provide everything except a platter for them to take cookies home and we spend a Sunday afternoon, just ladies, decorating cookies, listening to Christmas music and laughing."

Mary Jo Contello of Organized by MJ: "Make a list of everything you have to do leading up to the holiday including decorate thetree, bake, buy gifts and list the names and etc. Then try to plug dates with the task."

Dena Wilson of Places! Professional Organizing: "Do as much in advance as possible!"

Ellen Delap of "Start early! Prioritize. It’s not about doing it all. It’s about doing what has the most meaning."

Tammy Atchison of The Busy Corner: "Know your limits. It’s ok to set boundaries."

Elizabeth Wood of Clean Moving Crates: "Stock up now on hostess gifts and client appreciation gifts. I keep a stock of repurposed wine-bottle candles from Hanh Tran - she also has other glass bottles than wine that she has cut and smoothed - they are a unique and inexpensive gift that supports a local artist. I keep a drawer stocked so I just grab one as I leave for the event - it keeps me from having to stress about giving "the right thing.""

Donna Matthews of Slay the Chaos: "Simple Does It. Let it Go. A place for everything and everything a place Your Way! Also, rather than a ton of "stuff" I love to use scent to transform my home - candles, tea, oils, coffees" 💕"

Amy Vance of Eco Modern Concierge: "Start early! It makes the holidays so much more less stressful. Also, create a holiday binder with November & December calendar pages, gift lists, receipts, timelines, budgets, etc."

Made in the USA: Mary's Candles

Last year my aunt's gave me this Mary's Candles in the Creme Brûlée scent and it smells divine. I was so excited to see that they are at Walmart. I love the way they smell and that they are made in the USA. I do like using essential oils, but also like using candles from time to time. I think these would make a perfect holiday or hostess gift. At $7 you can't beat the price. Note: the online linked price is higher than they were in store.

What are some of your favorite candles?

Thankful for All Clients

Well this year has been a great year and I am SOOOOOOOOO thankful for ALL of my clients. Here are some reviews and testimonials that I am grateful for.

"Amy is the BEST. She’s helped us in more ways than I describe. She’s professional, dependable, organized, pleasant: you can’t possibly find a better person for anything of your concierge jobs. She’s helped us out on at least three occasions, and I know we’ll continue to depend on her in the future."

"Amy was a dream to work with on my project. She was efficient and conservative. She used what I had to help organize, which kept my costs low. I would use her again for sure!"

"Amy helped me organize several spaces in my new home. I moved in my home at 36 weeks pregnant and called her at 37 weeks desperate for some help. I couldn’t bend over much less think about the energy required to organize a new space. She was quick to respond and made time for me right away. I had to leave her both times and hope that she did what I wanted and I was not disappointed. She took the lead and really took the guess work out of it for me. I’m the type of person who knew what organizing items I wanted to use, so I purchased those myself. But I would highly recommend her to do that for you as well because she had a lot of good ideas and was able to tell me where I would find the best prices for what I wanted. I referred a friend to her and they’re using her as well. I will definitely be calling Amy again in the future and could see myself using her annually just to keep me refreshed and organized. Thanks Amy!"

"Amy and her assistant, Mary Jo, helped us with move in and organization when we moved into our new home several months ago. These women were life savers! We were so overwhelmed and in the course of a weekend, we had functional bathrooms and kitchen. Our pantry and bedroom closet were organized and ready to go. Mounds of things that we were ready to discard were packed up and carted off for donation. I would definitely use them again without hesitation."

"Amy was awesome! My pantry and office are happy places again. She was efficient with her time and truly helped me get organized. I feel much more settled in our new home!"
"Amy is AMAZING! I contacted her through her website a few days after we moved into our newly remodeled house. I was completely overwhelmed and there was literally stuff on every surface of my kitchen. Amy called me within a few hours and we had our initial consultation and set up time to get to work super fast! Not only did she help me figure out where to put things she helped me unpack them and put them all away. LIFESAVER! She also helped me reorganize my playroom so quickly and efficiently!"

"Amy is the absolutely the best. She’s professional, kind, thorough and incredible at what she does. I got her name from a good friend who worked with her after Harvey. I know she helped that family put their life back together, and she helped me slough a huge weight off my shoulders (and get to the next step in my professional life) by clearing out my home office and nightmare closet. I no longer fear walking into those rooms that once felt so out of control after my move. Her rates are totally reasonable, she’s flexible and non-judgmental, which is especially nice if you’re embarrassed about your mess. :) I liked her so much; she really made the time go by quickly and the whole process surprisingly fun. And there’s a huge bonus built into the “eco” part of her business name: she ensures that all your discarded items are handled responsibly. Even damaged clothes and wares I didn’t know how to handle are either recycled or used by someone in need. It felt really good to be a part of her sustainable, eco-friendly mission. I’ve even managed to keep my newly tidy areas tidy!"

"Amy is incredible! Working for a large non profit with a small staff, we often don't have time to dedicate focus on organizing our storage closet. She came in and organized every single piece of that closet in a way that made perfect sense to us! Her eye for detail is unmatched. She also worked quickly and efficiently. We can now breathe a sigh of relief when we need to find something in our closet! I would highly reccomend her for any of your organizing needs!"

"Amy was terrific! I couldn't have moved without her!"

"Amy was very professional, a hard worker, and I would definitely hire her again."

"Amy deserves 6 stars on a scale of 1-5. is incredible and a total life saver. I travel a significant amount for work and am out of town more than I'm in town. I've worked with Amy for 5 years and she has greatly improved my quality of life. She helps me stay on top of things in my personal life that otherwise would fall through the cracks given my work and travel schedule. From running errands like dry cleaning, groceries and going to the post office, to organizing my office, consolidating bills and even planning parties -- Amy does it all. She is proactive and even remembers birthdays of friends I like to send flowers to! What's more impressive still, is her attitude. She is honest, trustworthy and treats everyone she works with professionally. She is extremely efficient, communicates well and is the definition of organized. I cannot say enough good things about her and it really is hard to imagine my life "pre-Amy"."

"They were responsive to my inquiry, made an appointment and were right on time. All commitments were met and they did a great job in organizing my after move donations, and there was a lot. The price is very reasonable and I would not hesitate to hire again."
"Phenomenal job organizing my garage. Friendly, collaborative and decisive when necessary. I will definitely use her again."

"I worked alongside Amy for our common client for over a week and saw her work long hours every day to make sure the client was as satisfied as possible during a stressful period. She has a great work ethic and definitely goes the extra mile."

"Amy from Eco Modern Concierge is amazing!! She helped me organize my closet, bathroom cabinets and a mail area. I was feeling overwhelmed before calling Amy but after Amy came in for her initial consultation, she put my mind at ease. She sent recommendations of bins and trays to buy and helped get everything organized in 3 hours! She was respectful of my space and gave me some great tips on keeping everything organized. The areas look awesome now! I highly recommend Eco Modern Concierge!"

"Amy Mayfield of Eco-Modern Concierge is outstanding. She is super dependable and trustworthy. She has amazing organizing skills and is very efficient. You'll love her. Kim P"

Made in the USA: Native Deodorant

Well I have blogged about so many different natural, made in the USA deodorants on here. So many of my clients use these Native brand deodorants and love them. They are aluminum and paraben free. I do like them and really like having the travel size stay in my overnight bag, but don't like that they start to clump from time to time. Have you used this brand and do you like it?

Giveaway: Smile Brilliant cariPRO Ultrasonic Toothbrush

Are there any electronic toothbrush users out there? I have been using an electronic toothbrush for about 13 years now and don't plan on ever going back to a plain ol' regular toothbrush. When I got my first electronic toothbrush I wanted it because it was recommended by my dentist at the time and heard great things about them. Sure enough, I got one as a gift in 2005 and was so happy. I saw immediate results. I like that electronic toothbrushes prompt you on how long you need to be brushing and especially how clean my mouth feels afterwards.

When Smile Brilliant reached out to me to try their new cariPRO Ultrasonic electric toothbrush and give one away to a lucky reader, I immediately said YES!!!! For those of you that have been reading for a while you know I am picky about who I work with when it comes to sponorships and I thought to myself "I mean, I brush my teeth several times a day and love my electronic toothbrush so why not? Plus, readers will get one too? Heck yeah!!"

Y'all I love this toothbrush! It pulses every 30 seconds and prompts you to move to a different quadrant of your mouth. This is something I had to get used to because my old one did not do that. It is a good reminder to brush other parts of your mouth. My teeth and gums feel so much cleaner and it is so light weight compared to my old electronic toothbrush. I love that the toothbrush heads have a tongue scrubber on the back of them and it has a clean, white, massage, gum care and sensitive modes. I have been using the whitening mode in hopes of whitening my teeth a little more.

I feel for the quality of brushing, price and functionality the Smile Brilliant cariPRO Ultrasonic electric toothbrush is totally worth it. The best part is they are giving one away to YOU! Enter HERE for your chance to win. They are also giving Eco Modern Concierge readers a discount for 20% off cariPRO Ultrasonic electric toothbrushes by entering the code: ecomodernconcierge20

Good luck and let me know how you like the toothbrush once you get it!

How to Organize Halloween Decorations

Gather all decorations. Gather all decorations from various rooms, cabinets, areas, etc. and put it all in one place.

Purge. Donate, recycle or trash decorations you no longer like, use or want.

Contain. Contain the decorations in very specific bins. Orange bins or lids like these are popular for storing Halloween decorations or weathertight bins. Use silica gel packets to keep moisture minimal and to help preserve some of your items, especially fabric decorations.

Wrap. Wrap breakable items in bubble wrap or tissue paper.

Make a list. Make a list of everything you may want to buy or need to replace for the following year.

Inventory. Inventory what is in each box, so you can find exactly what you are looking for.

Label. Label each box. I like using these labels.

Store. Store in a place where you have room. This could be in a closet, attic, basement, etc.

How do you like to organize your Halloween decorations?

The One Thing Houston Professional Organizers Do Every Day

I asked some NAPO Houston professional organizers, what is one thing you do everyday? These are some of the responses. THANK YOU to all my fellow Houston organizers for sending me your responses.

Dena Wilson of Places! Professional Organizing: "Have to make my bed each day. If for some reason I don’t (running late) I make it before I go to sleep."

Melony Davis of All About Space Organizing: "I unload my dishwasher every morning while my coffee makes, I make a realistic to-do list, I make my bed (even if I don’t use all of the decorative pillows every day), and I always wash my face before I go to bed."

Mary Jo Contello of Organized by MJ: "I make my bed, then I've always accomplished something. Check email before I leave house."

Valerie Thompson of Chronically Organized: " I the only organizer who doesn’t make my bed?!? I make a cup of earl grey tea every morning, after that it seems like every day is different."

Ximena Lopez of Zensible Organizing: "Coffee first thing in the morning , stretching exercises, make bed, check calendar, emails and FB ( have lots of family and friends far away) have breakfast at home, work from home or with clients, check emails before 6 pm, cook a nice dinner ( 70% of the week days), watch nice TV show or movie ( no news), sleep."

Gayle Goddard of The Clutter Fairy: "I do the bed every morning, but all my clearing/ resetting happens at night. I put everything back in the kitchen, food away, dishes in dishwasher, get through mail and pick up any trash, put the day's clothes/shoes/jewelry away, and manage cat boxes. I don't have any juice in the morning to do anything other than getting out the door!"

Naomi Kealy of Charming Spaces: "Make the bed, coffee, check my calendar and check my to do list. At night, I deal with mail right away, check the kids backpacks, have dinner as a family at the table, dishes, and I always wash my face and remove my makeup before bed (took years to form this habit lol)."

Ellen Delap of "I love my morning routine! Walk first, tea, email, get ready for the day and off to clients."

Tammy Atchison of The Busy Corner: "Before going to bed, I set up the next day. Have everything ready for client, create a daily list from my master list, usually look at Facebook!
...I’ve simplified my bed linens, so it’s easy to just pull up the covers!"

Meredith Brister of Sorted and Styled: "Make bed, floss, update bullet journal, unsubscribe from emails, classify mileage, take trash out, feed cats. Not in that order but at some point in the day."

Tiffany Mensing of Space & Serenity: "Coffee. Just thought of one other thing I always do...mascara. Or no one can see my eyelashes! "

Susan Wade of Sunflower Strategies: "If errands are needed, I write them down in the order I will go geographically so I'm not wasting time. Also, always add an item to the grocery list as I run low or use the last of.....can't stand going to the store more than once per week!"

Ellen Cooley of Southern Sequence: "I don’t go to bed without putting everything away and tidying up the main living area. i.e. fluff the pillows on the couch, straighten items on coffee table, etc. Helps me start the next morning fresh and less distracted!"

Amy Vance of Eco Modern Concierge: "I get everything ready for the next day this includes laying out clothes, checking my calendar and making sure I have all the supplies that I need for the next day. I check my email every morning, but don't always make the time to respond to everything right away. Only if it is urgent. I also take our dog, Rothko, out first thing every morning."

Client Use What You Already Have: Pantry Organization

Sometimes when you look at blog posts you expect to see things that are completely pretty, but the fact of the matter is, that is not always real life. This blog post is real life and how a majority of my clients have things. This particular client we used things that they already had to organize the space. They used their walk in pantry for multiple things like child toys, food, appliances, dishes and liquor.
  1. We got rid of expired food.
  2. Put like items together.
  3. Organized the shelves in a way that worked best for them.
  4. Put least used items towards the top.
  5. Put most used items at eye level for the adults and toys at bottom for the little one.

NAPO Conference: Q Center Eco Practices

When I was attending the NAPO Conference this past year at the Q Center in Chicago, I was happy to see that they had a lot of eco practices.

  • There were recycling stations everywhere that made it easy to recycle what I needed to.
  • There were water bottle refill stations.
  • The property is very walkable and you can go hiking straight from the property.
  • I reused my towels during my stay.
  • These are just a few things, but you can read more about their eco practices here

What are some eco practices you love seeing when you travel?

**the first photo is from my road trip to Chicago when I stopped off in Hot Springs, AR.

Death Organizing

Death organizing is something that I have been doing for years for clients, but last year was the first time I heard about Swedish death organizing from my cousin who sent me an article and then a book came out about it. Here are some, of many, things I often help people with, so their families don't have to:

  • Inventories
  • Making sure they have all of their important documents in one, accessible place
  • Listing heir wishes of where and who should get certain belongings
  • Helping clients make a list of things they still need to do like make will, paying for burials, etc.
  • Decluttering
  • Going through old paperwork
  • The list goes on and on
These are 2 books that are helpful in prepping for death organizing, Get it Together & The Art of Swedish Death Cleaning

Have you heard of death organizing?

Client Busy Mama: Pantry Organization

As I have talked about on here before, a lot of clients that hire me to help them get organized don't always necessarily want new products and we use what they already have. With this client we purged old food, rearranged some of the shelving and then put accessible items on the bottom and things that are not used a lot on the top.

Here are some items that are good to use when organizing cabinets with deep shelves:
