9 Things You Can Do Right Now to Prep for The Holidays

  1. Make and keep on ongoing master list of everything you want and need to do during the holidays.
  2. Give back. It is such a wonderful thing to do always, but during the holidays are especially hard for so many people. Decide what charity /charities you want to support and start prepping.
  3. Take inventory of gift wrapping supplies, baking supplies, card supplies, mailing supplies, etc.
  4. Schedule self care. You will be thankful you did this when the holidays are here.
  5. Schedule and take a day or two off to get things done. Prebook scheduled time off during the holidays to really get things done.
  6. Make sure to have extra items on hand. I like to have extra gift cards ready to go, various gifts, food items like cheese, crackers and meats. I like to have items on hand to make quick, easy meals in case I need to or have frozen food items that are delicious and that we can snack on appetizers. Extra decor supplies. Always have extra tape for gift wrapping and packing tape to ship items, readily available.
  7. Plan your outfits for you and your family. Whether you are attending events, church, small gatherings, etc. Make sure to have what you want to wear on hand so you are not scrambling last minute.
  8. Organize &/or clean regularly. This will help you stay on top of things so you are not frantic last minute right before guests come.
  9. Book services you know you will use during the holidays early. Like cleaning people, party help, gift wrapping help, someone to help put up and take down Christmas decor.

1st Day of Fall & a Fall Cleaning Checklist

Happy first day of Fall! Here is hot Houston where we are sweating more of the months of the year, we always look forward to *hopefully* cooler temperatures that fall brings. For me, it gives me an excitement of all the things that fall and the holidays bring. Plus, now that I am a parent I look forward to all the new things that I get to do with the kids as they grow.

Here is a fall cleaning checklist that you can do in order to prepare this season:
  • Windows. Clean them inside and out. An easy way to clean the outside is by using this outdoor window cleaner and to clean the inside windows (according to our housekeeper) use glass cleaner and this duster to easily get them cleaned.
  • Vacuum & flip the mattresses. Odds are you probably don't clean and flip your mattress that often, so with the new season it is a great time to do that. Sprinkle some baking soda on the mattress and let sit for at least 30 minutes and then vacuum it off.
  • Oven. Clean your oven in order to prep for all the cooking and baking you may do during this holiday season.
  • Carpets & flooring. Get carpets and floors cleaned to get a jump start on deep cleaning and all the traffic you may have in your house during the holidays.
  • Cabinet fronts. If you don't clean them regularly, now is a great time to do it because usually in the fall & winter the kitchen is more heavily used than on a normal basis.
  • Fridge & freezer. Now is the perfect time to clean out your fridge and freezer to make sure you have room for all the baking & cooking you may doing this holiday season. We love using shelf liner to make cleaning fridges and freezers easier. We also like using bins like these to contain food & condiments.
  • HVAC. Service your HVAC to make sure it is in top working order.
  • Fans. If you change the direction of your fans in the fall, be sure to clean them off as well. This fan duster works great to reach high fans and has a pivoting duster head to really get in all parts of the fan.
  • Fireplace & chimney. Make sure your fireplace and chimney are in great working order during this holiday season.
  • Kitchen appliances. If you know you will be using certain kitchen appliances this summer. Replace ones that need replacing and turn everything on to make sure they are all in working order.
What is on your fall cleaning list?

4 Tips to ReOrganizing Your Closet For Working From Home

Are you still working from home? Have you gotten into the slump of wearing the same old thing or defaulting to all loungewear? As a professional organizer, we are still getting a ton of requests from clients to help them organize their home offices, closet and various other spaces to help them work from. They still want to be presentable for any regular meetings, zoom call, etc. Below are 4 tips to reorganize your closet when working from home.

  • Put 3 outfits together with jewelry and allThis way if you have to get on an unexpected video conference call you are ready to go.
  • Purge work clothes. Now is a great time to purge work clothes, hose, shoes, etc. that you no longer love, doesn't fit, has holes, is in bad condition, etc.

  • Have your most used clothing items front and center and easily accessibleLess used items should be in harder to reach areas of your closet. This way you have your go tos easy to access and know exactly what you want and like.
  • Start a donation pileAs you declutter your closet have a donation pile easily accessible. So you can drop off or schedule a donation pick when places begin opening again. I like to use a bag or basket on the floor of my closet under my hanging clothes that way if I try something on and don't like it, I can just toss it in there.

What tips do you have for reorganizing your closet for working from home? Are you starting to go back into the office, will you do a hybrid or will permanently be working from home?

7 Tip on How to Manage Your Vacation & 2nd Homes

More and more we run into professional organizing and concierge clients that have more than 1 home. Whether it is a ranch house, beach house, mountain house, dessert house, lake house, etc. Every so often we get asked to help manage those 2nd and vacation homes. During the summers and winters and during the pandemic many of our clients fled Houston to their 2nd homes in an effort to get be somewhere different and because many had the time to spend at their 2nd / vacation homes.

Managing a 2nd or vacation home (s) can be a lot of work. There are several things you can do in order to take the stress out of it and really make the most of your time while you are there or if you will be renting it.
  • Inventory what you currently have. Inventory what you currently have at your 2nd home so you are not constantly bringing unnecessary items to your 2nd home. If you will be renting it, you can keep track if anything goes missing.
  • Make a list of what you need. What are some things you want to add to your 2nd / vacation home? Are there items that you have been meaning to take there? Repairs that need to be made? Make a list of anything that comes to mind while you are there.
  • Maintain the house. Schedule regular maintenance. Try to pick service providers who you can get on a regular service where they call you or automatically maintain. This will significantly reduce your stress level and keep things in tip top shape.
  • Organize. Get your 2nd home / vacation home organized and make sure there is a place for everything. That way it makes it easier to see what you have and what you need.
  • Keep a vendor list. Do you have specific vendors and services that you really like in the area where you have a vacation or 2nd home? If so, keep an ongoing vendor list. Often times vendors that service remote locations are not always findable on Google and are local and known by word of month. If you find a good vendor keep their information handy.
  • House binder. Make a house binder of all the things related to your vacation home that include contacts, local stores, vendors, bills and services associated with the 2nd or vacation home, etc. This will be a lifesaver in a pinch or if you have guests over to your house when you are not present.
  • Have an emergency contact or service handy. Be sure to have an emergency contact or service that you can call in case you need anything last minute, need them to check on the house during a natural disaster, etc.
Do you have any tips or tricks when it comes to managing a 2nd or vacation home?

6 Reasons Why it is Important to Write Things Down for Visual People

Are you a visual person? I am and writing things down with pen and paper really help me remember all the things that I need to do for myself, my business and for clients.  Doing professional organizing and concierge tasks for clients can mean juggling a ton of different balls all at once and writing everything down visually lets me quickly scan what needs to be and what the most important tasks may be. If you are a visual person like me, here are some reasons why writing things down is important.

  • It helps you remember things. You can often retain more when you are doing the act of writing things down.
  • It helps you keep a record of what needs to be done. Are you a list maker? I am and having a written list helps me keep a record and track of everything that needs to be done. I can ask my husband what needs to be done, but he does better when he has a list and can check things off.
  • Helps you get your ideas out of your head. Do you ever think of ideas at the strangest times? I do and writing things down immediately if possible helps me remember them. A lot of times these are things that need to be done in business or various ideas I have about various things.
  • Clears the mind. Before bed I often try to do a brain dump to get everything out of my head that is going on and what needs to be done the next day. This is so helpful to not start the days off chaotic thinking of the 5 million things that need to get done and how they are going to get done. That is why I try to plan the night before. Since having a baby this has been extremely helpful.
  • Helps with productivity. Keeps you on track of what needs to be done and staying productive because you can see what needs to be done and map out the best way to prioritize those tasks.
  • Frees up mental space. Getting things out of your head really helps you clear your mental space.
Some other thoughts....
  • Because I write so many things down I have made it a "goal" this year to use up various notepads I had laying around that were half used. I am happy to report that it is going well so far.
  • I once read that writing things down in a green pen or pencil helps you remember things more. I am not sure the science behind this, but I like the color green so it works out well.
  • I love using colored pens in general for writing things down because, for me, it helps me remember things more and I actually WANT to accomplish things.
  • I don't know about you, but for me making lists and crossing things off of them just feels dang good.
Are you a visual person? Why do you like writing things down?

Happy International Women's Day

Happy International Women’s Day! Eco Modern Concierge is a proud member of several women led organizations. We have worked very hard through the years to maintain our certifications, join various women led organizations and seek out various opportunities. We get a lot of “no”s, but that doesn’t stop us from keeping on trying to seek out those opportunities.

We love supporting other women and have so many great women in our lives. As much as we love supporting other women, I think it goes without saying that we love supporting all kinds of businesses small and big businesses. I should point out that many men run small business owners are just as important as women small business owners in my eyes and I am so happy that we have been able to collaborate and work together with many and many have been our champions from the beginning of Eco Modern Concierge's conception in 2005.

14 After Christmas / Holiday General Tips & Shopping Tips

This is a great time to start thinking about the holidays for the following year while this is all fresh on your mind. Last year I wrote about 21 Tips & Tricks for Getting Organized After the Holidays and Organizing Christmas decorations. Below are some additional various tips and tricks:

Tips:

  1. Label each bag, bin and box so you know what is in them.
  2. Make a list of all things you want to change for the previous year or things you want to remember. Did you want to purchase stamps earlier, ship items earlier, get certain decorations up by a certain time. Hire or outsource certain services, etc? What did you run out of?
  3. Sharpen your scissors.
  4. Budget now for next year. How much did you spend this year? More or less than last year? In the new year set aside a little money each month so you do not feel as overwhelmed and stressed closer to the holidays.
  5. Write thank you notes for gifts you received.
  6. As you are putting new items away, donate items you know you no longer need, want or like.

If you are shopping the day after Christmas here are some things to think about.

  1. Make a list ahead of time of everything you are needing to avoid impulse purchases. For me this year I am looking for timers, more bike bags, various decorations, etc.
  2. Did you receive gift cards as a gift? USE them on sales for purchases you may be making if you can.
  3. Only get supplies that you know you need. Did you run out of wrapping paper, tissue, gift card holders, etc.?
  4. If you are thinking of getting new Christmas lights for indoor or outdoor, now is a great time. Hardware stores usually have them deeply discounted.
  5. If you buy new decorations, make sure you have the proper storage solutions to put them.
  6. Shop early if you are looking for something specific or shop a couple of weeks later when discounts consistently get higher and higher.
  7. Don't forget to shop drugstores and various hardware stores.

Gift Wrapping Tips & Tricks

At Eco Modern Concierge we are gift wrapping experts and we help residential and business clients all over Houston and beyond with their gift wrap needs. From shopping, organizing gift wrap, organizing the gift wrap process, meeting deadlines and trying to get things done early, etc. It can be a tedious time consuming thing that many people do not want to do. So if this is something you don't like doing consider hiring a professional organizer or concierge to help you get this task done.

  • Always use excess ribbon.
  • It is best to use a medium to heavy grade paper.
  • If you are doing special things to your presents like pleating the paper buy paper that has grids.
  • Buy gift wrap & ribbon at the end of the season when it is inexpensive and practice, practice, practice.
  • There are many ways to measure paper so you get the exact amount like going 2/3rds up the side, measuring 1/2 from the middle of the box, using a ruler (handy on large packages), etc.
  • Measure ribbon by getting a tail on the ribbon and measure 5x by the longest edge. You would rather have too much than too little ribbon.
  • Place the top of the package facing down when you are wrapping.
  • Use fabric scissors only on ribbon, not gift wrap.
  • Use double stick tape to get the no edge look.
  • Use clear twist ties to secure special bows and embellishments.

  2. Meal plan and start adding items to your online grocery list with your preferred grocery store where you can just add to your cart & order when you are ready.
  3. Get to-go dishes that you can send family and friends home with.
