Houston Professional Organizer // Gift Wrap Organization

 

We love organizing gift wrap stations! As a professional organizer, I think I love them so much because you can see such fun transformations. A lot of people have their gift supplies just all mixed in with each other or it is just very chaotic, so the transformations are always awesome. Some people have a lot gift wrap, while others have hardly anything. Having your gift wrap organize is always good because you can find exactly what you need when you need it. I find that most of my clients are usually in a hurry when they need gift wrap supplies because it is usually when they are headed out the door and need to bring the gift with them. Also, with the holidays right around the corner you want to make sure everything is all organized. We love working with this client because they are the absolute sweetest, well most all of my clients are!

We did not use any product in this area and just used what they already had. So here is what we did: 

1. We sorted like items together 
2. Rainbowed the ribbon
3. Put various bags and boxes together
4. Put tissue all together and rainbowed it
5. Got rid of anything that was torn or clearly trash
6. The drawers were long enough and deep enough that we could keep all the rolls of wrapping paper together. 

I love rainbowing a lot of areas, you probably know that if you have worked with or have seen our projects. Rainbowing when it comes to ribbon and tissue is especially helpful because usually you are trying to perfect gifts with tissue, ribbons or bows based on color.

My Container Store Gift Wrapping Favorites 2020

 

Being a professional organizer and holiday concierge in Houston, TX it is part of my job to stay on top of what the latest is of a lot of things, including gift wrapping since we do a ton of gift wrapping and buy a lot of gift wrapping products for clients. Below are some of my favorite gift wrapping supplies from The Container Store. This year it appears their stock is much lower than past years, but they definitely still have some great finds.

Blue Wrapping Paper: I saw this wrapping and immediately loved it for the clients I will be helping wrap Hanukkah presents for. 

Wrapping Paper Holder: This wrapping paper holder is a must for gift wrap. Always choose the tallest wrapping paper holder like this one for those large rolls. 

Red & White Grosgrain Ribbon: I love using grosgrain ribbon for so many things and I think this red and white one is a classic. 

Adhesive Roller: Makes taping down packages so much easier. 

Scandinavian Boxes: I had not seen these before and thought they were cute for the holidays.

Vintage Wrapping Paper: I love the classic vintage paper and The Container Store has a lot of them this year. 

Elf Gift Wrapping Cutter: I got this last year and was skeptical, but once you get the hang of it, it actually works really well. 

Holiday Tags: I thought these holiday tags were cute and simple. 

Gold Glitter Decorative Tape: I thought this would be fun to decorate packages with and it comes in other colors as well. 

Super Tape: If you have never used this tape, it is ultra sticky and works great for glitter wrapping paper. 

Splatter Wrapping Paper: Another fun option for my clients who celebrate Hanukkah.

Beer / Drink Bags: I thought these were so cute and perfect if you would be attending any type of gathering this year. 

Wine Bag: There is a decent selection of wine bags this year, but I liked this one. 

Grey Ribbon: I loved this ribbon with the gold edge.

Gift Wrapping Cart: Lots of clients have this and I think it is great to keep wrapping supplies organized and the bonus is you can move it easily from room to room.

Vintage Santa Wrapping Paper: Once again I loved this vintage wrapping paper. 

Gift Box: I really liked this simple brown box with a red ribbon and thought it would be perfect for a gift card or something small. 

Merry Money Holder: Simple and cute money holder for those that make gift giving easy.

Gift Tags: I guess I like simple, clean lined things like these gift tags.

Gold Seals: I liked these seals to seal envelopes or baked goods boxes and bags.

Holiday Tips to Plan Ahead - Part 2

Utilize a professional organizer or concierge to help you during the holidays, believe me it will save you a ton of time and headaches. 

Here are a few things that you can do now to prep ahead. 

1. Begin meal planning for Thanksgiving. Pre-order any dishes to help ease the stress.
2. Meal plan and start adding items to your online grocery list with your preferred grocery store where you can just add to your cart & order when you are ready.
3. Get to-go dishes that you can send family and friends home with.

Thanksgiving Must Haves: For Organized and Stress-Free Thanksgiving Hosting

When hosting Thanksgiving there a few things you want to make sure you have on hand for those just in case moments and for moments when you may need a little extra something. What do you like to keep on hand during Thanksgiving for those unexpected moments.

1. Red Wine Stain Remover: We have all been there where somebody accidentally spills something, so much suer you have red wine stain remover handy.
2. Carpet Cleaner: For all other stains from food to kids to pets. I have used this stuff for many, many years and it is all of the sudden super popular again. I think because some blogger posted about it, who knows lol. If you are local in Houston, you can get it at Bering's Hardware.
3. Goo Gone Pen: for markers, when you see a label on a new dish that you need to get off, etc. 
4. Silver Polish: If you use silver on a regular basis, this is great 
5. Something that smells good: whether that is a reed diffuser, candle or essential oils. You want people to step into your home feeling welcomed. 
6. To go containers: If you are hosting Thanksgiving there is sure to be leftovers, so make you sure you are prepped and ready to send people home with leftovers. You can find reusable containers at Sam's Club & Costco or online. As you probably saw in this post. One organizer suggested downsizing your personal storage container stash. 
7. An iron, steamer or wrinkle releaser: If you are the type that likes to have fresh, crisp linens on hand than this is especially helpful. If someone arrives super early and wants to help have them freshen up the linens for you.
8. Mints or mouthwash in the bathroom: After a full meal some feel like to have something on hand to freshen up their breath. Decant mouthwash and have a little station set up with mini cups for your guests to use. I have been to many of houses where where they have mouthwash stations and I always think it is a great idea.
9. Folding chair: It is always nice to make sure you have plenty of seating for any unexpected guest that may show up.

I know it is still a little over a month away, but now is  a great time to start thinking about it in order to be prepared and ready for everything that the holiday season entails. I asked my fellow NAPO Houston professional organizers what some of their #1 tips were and here is what they had to say.

Holiday Money Saving Tips & Tricks

During the holidays it can be a super stressful time for many people especially when it comes to money.   As a professional organizer and concierge I am always thinking with my clients in mind and trying to be several steps ahead of the game. Here are some various holiday money saving tips and tricks that you can start implementing and trying to get ahead of the game.

Start buying gift cards now to use towards holiday gifts, events, etc. in November & December. Often times gift cards go on sale through different retailers around holiday times like Father's Day, Labor Day, etc. or you can double, triple or quadruple fuel reward points at certain grocery stores throughout the year. Buy gift cards early for places you know you will shop, dine or attend events for during the holidays so you are not as stressed out when it comes to the holidays.

Paying for certain holiday services early will often give you bigger discounts. Many holiday light companies in Houston offer discounts anywhere from 50-75% off if you get your lights installed at the end of October versus in late November and December. Just because you have them installed doesn't mean you have to turn them on. Also, some Christmas tree companies will give you a discount if you pre-order your Christmas tree early. Many photographers will offer discounts for holiday photos if you book early.

Go to training schools to get self-care services like hair, massage, etc. Many people like to partake in various self care services during the holidays to prep for events, relieve stress, etc. If you are trying to save money consider going to training schools that offer services like massage, hair, etc. to receive their services at a greatly discounted price. 

Always ask stores for discounts and to price compare. Many stores will price compare, take expired coupons, discount various items if a box is damaged and sometimes you can even add on a coupon after price matching for even bigger discounts. It doesn't hurt to ask, and the worst that can happen is the manager says no. 

If you are hosting a party and are serving guests buffet style, put filler foods towards the beginning of the line. Start off the line with foods in the front like breads, pasta, chips, egg based casseroles, fruits  & veggies, etc. These are often inexpensive items you can get from the store and people tend to fill up their plates a lot with foods at the beginning of the line and then they fill fuller so you can spend less and offer less portions on more expensive food items like meat, fish, etc. 

Utilize neighborhood Facebook groups for various services. Many neighborhood Facebook groups post that their kids are off from college, need a little extra cash, etc. and offer various services like babysitting, yard work, light hanging, assembling toys, etc. I have personally used many high school kids that help various home projects. It is inexpensive and great way to help them out.

Houston Professional Organizer // Client Whole House Organization Jewelry Organization

Jewelry organizing is one of those things that there is usually not a perfect solution that we use time and time again because everyone has such a different amount and types of jewelry. With this client we slowly worked through her whole house last year and one of the times I was there we worked on her jewelry. I organized all her earrings (this is only one picture, there was actually a stack of acrylic drawers that had earrings in them as well) We put a lot of the statement earrings on this jewelry organizer and smaller earrings like studs in the acrylic drawers like these. 

Here is what I did to organize the jewelry:

1. Sort all jewelry
2. Match like pairs together
3. Organize on the accordion organizer or in the acrylic jewelry drawers

How to Stay Organized During the Halloween Season

I don't know about you, but once October hits in our business and household things start to speed up a little more than usual. We are constantly helping concierge and organizing clients during the holiday season and it is important to stay organized in order to make sure you get everything done and stay a little less stressed, including during the Halloween season.

Use a blank calendar to keep track of everything you will be doing in regards to Halloween. This includes parties, making costumes, school events, fall festivals / carnivals, etc. I know things my look different this year for some cities and states because of COVID, but it is still good to have a plan.

Set deadlines and goals for yourself. If you are making your costume &/or your kids costume, plan ahead on a calendar of when things to get done by. If you are hosting a party plan on the calendar what you need to do, days you need to start prepping, supplies, etc,.

Pick and day and time you will get pumpkins. If you are usually last minute and are a hurry to just pick something up in order to carve pumpkins or you feel obligated, then plan day you will actually go and get pumpkins.

Gather and organize Halloween decorations. Gather all of your decorations if they are spread out in different areas and organize them, get rid of what you don't need and make a list of things you want to get.

Make sure you have a plan for the night of Halloween. Will you be taking the kids trick or treating? Will you be staying home passing out candy? Will you be going out to a Halloween party? Will you be staying home with the lights turned off?

Make sure your pets are safe during Halloween. Make sure there are not plants or food within reach of them if they are prone to getting into things, make sure to keep them inside on Halloween night, etc.

Clean up your messes. Whether you are cooking, doing school projects, prepping for a party, making costumes, etc., be sure to clean up as you go.

Opt for eco options. Take reusable bags or pumpkins when trick or treating, opt for healthier candy options, buy used costumes, etc.

Have an easy dinner ready to go for Halloween night. Have something easy and quick to make for Halloween night. Growing up we always had chili and now my husband and I usually make Frito pie on Halloween night.

Organize and store everything at the end of the season. At the end of the season get rid of broken, torn or no longer wanted Halloween items. Properly store, organize and label Halloween bins, so you know exactly where everything is for the following year.
